About Phil Ayala Photography
Capturing the Art of Movement
From the rugged landscapes captured during high school rock climbing adventures to the dynamic leaps of dancers in the heart of the city, my journey with photography has been one of constant discovery and passion. For over 20 years, I've been capturing moments, with the last two years dedicated to transforming this passion into a thriving business, Phil Ayala Photography.
A Dance with the Camera
My specialization lies in dance, show, and portrait photography. There's a unique magic in freezing a dancer's emotion at the apex of their performance, in capturing a moment that for them becomes an everlasting memory. My approach isn't just about taking pictures; it's about documenting the intensity, personality, and artistry of each performer.
My style thrives on the unexpected - capturing the art of dance not just on stage but in the wild; amidst nature, on busy streets, or against the backdrop of striking architecture. This approach transforms ordinary spaces into extraordinary scenes, highlighting the dancer's power, lines, and grace.
Influences and Inspirations
Inspired by the exceptional works of Omar Z Robles and Jordan Matter, I blend the theatricality of dance and show with the raw beauty of the world around us. Theatre, ballets, musicals, and the architectural grandeur of cities also play a vital role in shaping my visual narrative.
A Technological and Theatrical Blend
My roles as a stagehand for the Local 98 stagehand union and the Director of Technology for Derry Township School District have profoundly influenced my photography. With a strong theatre background, I understand the pivotal moments of a performance, while my technical expertise ensures easy access and comprehension of the content I create.
Beyond the Lens
When I'm not behind the camera, I'm often collaborating with IATSE as a stagehand or dresser, exploring new cities, or indulging in their culinary delights. These travels often spark ideas for future shoots, imagining dancers adding life and beauty to various locales.
Collaboration and Vision
Collaboration is at the heart of my work. I believe in working hand-in-hand with dancers and studios, ensuring that my captures reflect their vision and essence. My goal is for each person who sees my photographs to see a part of themselves, whether they are the subject or the viewer, and feel inspired.
